Bag to Sleep - Pass it on! Project

We are delighted to  advise our community product to reduce the rate of vulnerable babies dying in South Auckland has now spread around New Zealand!

Every year more than 20 babies die in South Auckland from SIDS, SUDI or sleep environment accidents.  “We are partnering with two amazing organisations to make a real difference to the lives of babies in South Auckland - Otara Health and Change for our Children.

Otara Health is working to identify vulnerable babies within Otara and provide safe sleep environments for these babies as newborns. Change for our Children works nationally to educate about safe sleep for babies and is co-ordinating the Pepi-Pod program.

And now The Sleep Store and Change for our Children are working together to provide sleeping bags to teen parents, after figures show teen parents in New Zealand have he highest risk of losing a baby to SUDI. We have supplied bags to babies in approx 10 teen parent units around New Zealand, and Change for our Children are providing safe sleep education and monitoring the program.

What is the project?

We are focusing our efforts on providing safe sleeping environments for babies over 4 months of age, who have been identified as vulnerable and at possible risk.

Our part in this project is coordinating the provision of a free, quality sleeping bag for our vulnerable babies to sleep in. This reduces the risk of over-heating and bedding suffocation, particularly once babies are moving about.

Prior to 4 months of age, babies more vulnerable to accidental suffocation will be offered a portable sleep space (PSS), plus education on safe sleep by Otara Health, within their P?pi-Pod program. project. .  You can read more about the Pepi-Pod project here.

How can you help make a real difference?

We need donations of quality sleeping bags to provide free to babies in South Auckland, and now around New Zealand too.

Rather than give away, sell or throw away sleeping bags, please donate your no-longer required sleeping bag to our project!

While we will be donating bags ourselves on a regular basis, this project needs our customers to come on board and help make a difference.

What do we need?

We need quality second hand or new sleeping bags.

Please do not send bags made from polar fleece or polyester fabric, apart from polyester filling in cotton lined bags. We can also not accept bags with sleeves.

Preference is for 100% natural fibre sleeping bags, such as cotton, wool or merino.

Please ensure your bag is clean and ready for use. If it needs a small repair, please include a note so we can take care of this before sending the bag out.

Bags need to be a good quality brand and in good useable condition please. Our preference is for quality brands rather than cheapies like Cotton On Kids type bags, as we want the receiving parents to receive a quality, desirable product which would make them using it much more likely. Tatty, dirty or old bags are not needed thank you.

All izes are needed but preference is for bags for 0-6 months or up to 2 years.

How can I get involved?

Second hand / recycled bags:

If you have a quality sleeping bag you would like to donate, please follow these instructions!

1. Ensure your bag is washed and in good repair. It doesn't need to be in perfect condition, but preference is for bags without holes and in good working order.

2. Please post your bag to:    Safe Sleep Project, PO Box 60650, Titirangi, Auckland. Please include your details so we have a record of where our bags have come from.

3. Pat yourself on the back - you are contributing to a real grass-roots program that will provide a safe sleep environment for a precious baby.

Purchase of a new bag:

If you do not have a bag to donate but would like to purchase a new sleeping bag to donate, we would be very appreciative. Please place your order through our website as normal and note SAFE SLEEP PROJECT in the courier comments. We will refund your shipping by loyalty points.

What is The Sleep Store contributing?

We are providing all the people power, logistics and organisation to manage this project. We will be receiving, sorting, checking and packaging the bags before we send consignments to Otara Health for distribution. We will also be making our own donations of sleeping bags both from our Sleep Store business, from woolbabe and our team members are also involved.

We are also working closely with Change for our Children on safe sleep messages and the instructions and information that will be provided with the sleeping bags in this project.

Thanks very much and we look forward to receiving your donation.
