Starting Solids FAQs
When should I start solids?
Most babies are ready to start solids at around six months of age, although every baby develops at their own pace. You may notice your baby is showing interest in your food or opens their mouth when a spoon comes towards them; these signs along with having good head and neck control and sitting with support mean your baby may be ready for solids. If you're unsure, your GP or Well Child provider can provide personalised advice.
What essentials do I need for starting solids?
A few key essentials can help make starting solids more enjoyable for both you and your baby. Start with a supportive high chair so baby can sit at table height with the family and so you can feed baby easily, if you’re spoon feeding. Choose baby spoons, suction bowls or plates and a starter cup or sippy cup depending on how you want to serve your food. Divided plates are popular for little ones and baby-led weaning, whilst suction bottoms can prevent the inevitable dinner upturned on the high chair! Silicone and stainless-steel serve ware is popular because they're durable options, easy to clean and made for everyday use.
